This is something that I was always hearing when I was in specification sales. If you are in sales then cold calling is not the answer.
The answer is to have a marketing system of your own. This is what Frank J Rumbauskas calls a self-marketing system, which can get prospects to find you and then your business. In the information age, it is important to realise that the power is in the hands of the potential client rather than the salesman or his company.
I use gratitude as the central feature of my marketing strategy. This all began with Tic Tacs, which if you have read my earlier posts I have talked about earlier.
Gratitude can be a very attractive unique selling point, that draws people (especially if you do as Louise Hay talks about in her book, make it a way of life ). This is what Ann Sieg calls Attraction Marketing and she has written a report called the Attraction Marketers Manifesto (http://dunraven.marketersmanifesto.com/).
What if the idea of marketing is daunting to you? Well naturally there are plenty of books on the subject but a good place to start is Marketing for Dummies ( ), or Principles of Marketing by David Jobber ( ), if you want more detail.
A blog like this or an article in Street Articles, which you then bookmark on www.digg.com can become introductory components to your self-marketing system. Once you have your prospective clients interest, you can then lead them to your professional looking website.
Thanks again to Frank J Rumbauskas, I strongly recommend having you own site; even if your company or employer has one. This is so as to increase the likelihood of your clients viewing you as a professional, and somebody with whom they wish to consult.
To do this the best place to start is with SBI who can help you make your words sell (http://myws.sitesell.com/lee111.html). They will help you build the content of your site using the best keywords, host your site and auto ping it to the search engines. All this and much more for only $29 a month, means it is a no brainer, especially as they will help you monetise your site. This gives you the added bonus of possibly having an additional revenue stream.
By writing blogs, or an article on Street Articles, and bookmarking it you get back links to your website. This could create the starting blocks of your self-marketing system. Enabling you to attract clients and generate word of mouth marketing; which can only be done by people without a vested interest. Even better it might even mean that you website benefits from viral marketing. The result, using gratitude you can work smarter, rather than harder.
