When life seems rough it is important not to forget how affluent we in the west are. This came home to me when a friend who works in Africa came to visit recently.
Even when you are on your uppers and everything seems gloomy and it is hard to see a way forward. It is possible to make things better by being grateful for the affluence that surrounds you. Whilst you might not feel it, it is there to help you.
In the U.K. for example we have a fabulous health service which helps us all. We also have a wonderful social support structure.
So being grateful for the affluence and support structures that we all benefit from; can help you be ready for when luck comes along. Thereby motivating you to do small things that compound over time to turn your life around.
