As Ann Sieg says in her book The Renegade Marketer, if you don't differentiate yourself, you will die. By this I mean that by not standing out from your competitors, you will not attract new customers.
By using genuine gratitude for time, an enquiry, or whatever, even without an actual commitment on the prospects behalf, will be remembered.
It can be a central part of your Unique Selling Proposition.
Having gratitude at the core of your activity, makes you more likely to actually be unique. This means you are more valuable to everyone.
This increases visits to your website and thereby more business. An autoresponder can enable you to thank visitors to your website for doing so. This can help you make money out of people who leave your site; by stimulating the desire come back and find out more. This can result in word of mouth recommendation as I have talked about previously.
It can also mean that other organisations are moved to come to you with joint ventures. This can result in a massive increase in the number of prospective, and actual customers you have.
