Gratitude for Inspiring friends
In the post olympic energy, a friend on Facebook pointed us in the direction of the legacy website and the clubs that were having a come and try weekend.
We took our kids to club near us that was letting people try sports that my son had really enjoyed in the olympics, and some others. The result was that my sone now wants to go to Shinty training every Friday night. These come and try weekends was great for people with young kids, as I believe it is very important to expose them to as many different sports as possible. This way they can find the one, or ones, that they like. Too often certain schools put pressure on kids to play one or two sports, inorder to conform.
I was lucky to go to a school that followed the idea that more is in you, and allowed you to try different sports to find out what you were good at. I became really good at running and kayaking, and stopped feeling like a failure because I didn't conform to the mould.
This friend also told us about the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run Family Mile. We entered it and my son ran his first mile in 8 minutes, and had a huge sense of achievement.
It is not only olympians and paralympians that can inspire the next generation, people closer to you can do so too. I am very grateful to this friend who told us about these events.
